The most difficult part of a Tech business is converting concepts into actual Products

The next difficult part is to have a leader of your Product & Tech

But now that you are here, let’s take away your difficulties.

YourCTPO

I am a 2x entrepreneur, an IIT / IIM alumnus, with 22+ years’ experience in all aspects of Technology Products.

I engage as a CTPO (Chief Technology and Product Officer), in a fractional capacity.

Now in all likelihood, this fractional thing is somewhat new to you, and you have landed here with quite a few questions. Let’s address them right away!

Frequently Unanswered Questions

What is a Fractional CTPO?

A core member of your CxO team, fulfilling the function of Product and Technology Leadership by committing a certain amount of time per month.

What’s the scope of work as a Fractional CTPO?

The scope is everything that a full-time CTPO would do.

I mean everything — Owning the Product Strategy, Vision & Roadmap, Collaborating with Sales & Marketing, Tech Architecture, Employee Performance Appraisals… – you get the idea.

Basically, the scope is unlimited, while it’s only the time spent per month which is limited.

What kind of engagement depth are we talking?

This is not a traditional “consulting” gig.

The level of engagement is as hands-on as required.

For example,

  • A new module needs to be code reviewed and the Engineering Manager is not available?
  • An RFP needs urgent Product related inputs?
  • SRS needs to be reviewed / edited?
  • A candidate needs to be interviewed?
  • Investor’s feedback to be incorporated in the pitch-deck?
  • Anything else?

Yes, to all of the above. Anything that keeps the needle moving.

Take this website itself, for instance. From purchasing & configuring the Azure VM, to enhancing the security of the site, to setting up WordPress and the theme, to drafting the pages and creating all the content, no other human being was involved in the entire process (although Artificial Intelligence was involved!)

How is this different from a vendor / agency?

Agencies typically work in a fixed scope + fixed bid mode, with someone in the team focusing on “Change Requests” all the time, and the usual squabbles over scope creeps and similar issues.

In my case, by definition, those issues cannot arise, because I am not an IT outsourcing company, or an agency, or a vendor.

Any preferred team structure?

Completely flexible on that aspect.

I work with any combination of existing employees + any number of agencies that you work with.  Along the journey, I also recommend changes to the team structure if required.

About Me

A successful Tech Product needs to have all the engines of Product Management, Sales & Marketing, and Development, firing in sync.

With my extensive experience in the Tech Products domain, I have significant background in running each of these functions.

When I lead the Product function, I am able to keep all these aspects in consideration. And so, from the founders’ perspective, nothing is ever lost in translation.

Here’s a little visual that summarizes my experience –
